I’m fairly certain God gives us spectacular sunrises and sunsets in the Winter to compensate for the bare trees and bitter cold.
( I ’m not trying to be blithe or disrespectful . I think He is a Good Father who gives us Good gifts.)
I was reminded of the magical sunrises this morning when I bore witness to this right outside my window.
I was reminded of it again tonight as I read a prayer from the Church of England. That goes, in part, something like this :
“Blessed are you, Lord God, creator of day and night:
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As darkness falls you renew your promise
to reveal among us the light of your presence.
By the light of Christ, your living Word,
dispel the darkness of our hearts
that we may walk as children of light
and sing your praise throughout the world.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit”
Did you catch that? “As darkness falls , You Renew Your promise to reveal among us the Light of Your Presence.”
His presence- promised from the opening chapters of Genesis. His presence- what John requests at the end of Revelation.
His name, given to his parents, Emmanuel, Literally”God with Us.”
The gift was the gift of His presence. The hope was that He would illuminate our world, give us the light to see clearly .
He was Light, and the Light was the Life of all mankind. The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot hide it. ( John 1 paraphrase)
The dark and cold of the winter make me crave the light.
The dark, cold, ugly world makes me crave His Light.
The Winter gives way to His Light, renewed along with His Mercies each morning.
( see Lamentations 3:22 & 23)
Light in the Dark. Beautiful, gorgeous light. The kind of light that is so powerful that we temporarily forget that once we wondered if we would see again.
The light shines even here, even now, with the barest of winter all around.
And that is Precisely the Miracle of Christmas.
